Over 600 animals come into the shelter every year for treatment, with hundreds more being dispersed to other wildlife shelters that can accommodate them. Best practice requires that animals are kept close to their home habitats, or at least within the same geographic boundaries and habitat types. We take in all species of wildlife for treatment and rehabilitation. This requires specialised specialised foods, medications and housing. Enclosures must be adaptable and they need constant maintenance and replacement.
The daily management of the shelter is an enormous task. Other than the dailt tasks of caring for the wildlife, the support structres must be kept operational. Policies and procedures, food plans, management of consumables, volunteer orientation and training, intake data, internal communications and wildlife treatment rehabilitation plans all need to be developed, implimented and supoported.
As far as goals for 2026 and beyond - we are wanting to provide a high standard of care and move more towards providing assessment and treatment support for rescuers and shelters, and training for rescuers, incoming shelters and vet nurses. We would like the existing shelter to eventually become a training shelter. A huge part of this would be obtaining our own X-ray machine to enable us to respond quicker and provide optimal care with less stress on animals as they are transported to vet clinics for these X-ray assesments.
