The Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees & Detainees (CARAD) has been fortunate to call our office at 245 Stirling Street, Perth our home for almost two decades, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Uniting Church in the City (UCIC). Their peppercorn lease arrangement has enabled us to dedicate our resources directly to what matters most – supporting our clients on their journey rebuilding their lives with renewed hope. However, circumstances have changed, and UCIC are no longer able to continue this generous arrangement. With the property potentially being advertised for sale as early as June 2025, we now face an urgent need to secure accommodation to ensure we can continue our essential work without interruption.

This challenge presents both uncertainty and opportunity. CARAD is actively exploring several pathways forward, including the possibility of purchasing our own property or securing a lease agreement at an alternative location with favourable rental terms. Each of these options requires significant funding, and we're turning to our valued supporters – people like you who understand the critical importance of our work – to help make this transition possible.

‘I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to CARAD for the invaluable support they provided during my time of need. The food bank and accommodation assistance made a significant difference in my life. I’d like to acknowledge the entire team for their incredible dedication and compassion. Their kindness and commitment truly stood out and I am eternally grateful for their help. Thank you for making a positive impact in my journey.’ – Client from Zimbabwe

Your support has never been more crucial. The funds we raise through this campaign will ensure CARAD can secure appropriate accommodation and continue providing the life-changing services our clients depend on. We're heartened by the generosity our community has shown us over the years and we know that together, we can overcome this challenge and emerge even stronger.

We want to be transparent with our supporters: should CARAD be fortunate enough to receive a donated building or secure another peppercorn lease arrangement during this campaign, all funds raised will be redirected to address our clients' ongoing housing and other essential needs. Housing remains the single largest expense our clients face, and these funds would provide crucial support to help more people seeking asylum transition from homelessness into stable, secure accommodation in Western Australia.

Your contribution today isn't just helping CARAD find a new home – it's ensuring we can continue to help our clients find theirs.

‘Thank you CARAD for all the wonderful work that you do for people seeking asylum, people with refugee status and our community as a whole. Your work is incredibly important and contributes in countless ways at a time where there is so much hardship felt by so many.’ - CARAD Donor
